true, end-to-end digitalization. Worse, a fragmented network topology can expose operations to security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit to gain access to critical assets and data, both on or off the shop floor.

Safety and Redundancy All in One Processor

It used to be that the only platform supporting both safety and redundancy in one processer was the S7-400. That all changes with the release of the 1518HF-4 PN. Introduced to the market along with TIA Portal Version V17, the CPU 1518HF-4 PN is suitable for applications placing highest demands on availability, program scope and processing speed, which at the same time require functional safety up to SIL 3.

Like any other S7-1500 failsafe controller, the CPU 1518HF-4 PN can be operated without a safety program for standard applications, and it can be programmed with STEP 7 and STEP 7 Safety TIA Portal Version 17 and higher.

Constellation Brands, Inc. (CBI) is among the world’s top manufacturers and marketers of spirits, wine, and beer, operating in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, and Italy. As the third largest beer company in the U.S.,
its well-known beer lines, such as Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico, are among the nation’s fastest-growing brands. But before 2013, CBI was strictly an importer, not a producer, and had never brewed a single bottle of beer.

That year, the company agreed to acquire from Grupo Modelo its U.S. brand rights and massive Nava brewery in Mexico. So, with the stroke of a pen, CBI found itself in the challenging world of large-scale beer brewing and bottling operations. Since then, the Nava brewery has become the world’s largest of its kind with an annual production capacity today of nearly 27.5
million hectoliters. Its operations cover 885 acres near Piedras Negras, Mexico, just a few miles from the U.S. border. Rail lines bring in raw materials, mostly rice, barley malt, and corn grits, where they are mixed with water. After brewing, sixteen packaging lines put the beer in bottles,
cans, and kegs to be palletized and loaded back on trains that take them to market.

The Integrating Factor: SIMATIC S7-1200

The vision of a self-controlling, self-optimizing, self-organizing factory has now become a fixed part of the industrial and automation worlds. Networked, intelligent systems, which control processes autonomously, are technically no longer dreams of the future. But even in the details, Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are opening up new applications for optimizing processes. However, this requires machines and systems to be easily integrated into a common data environment.

One application that requires such integration is data-based Condition Monitoring, which allows maintenance activities to be matched to actual needs and better scheduled. The networking of data also facilitates new approaches to process optimization, such as optimizing of energy efficiency. The machines or plant sections have often already been energetically optimized. An overall view of all energy data combined with intelligent networking of the entire operation opens up further potential for recognizing and using energy intelligently. For example by intelligent load management or chaining processes with complementary energy requirements. However, modern production facilities are not yet self-organizing, but they can be organized flexibly and controlled by new, modular line concepts, in which production stages can be combined in many different ways.

Prevent Short-Term Power Failures with a SITOP Buffer Module

The quality of your power supply units alone won’t guarantee a fault-free, 24-volt power supply. Power failures, extreme variations in the mains voltage or a faulty load can cause plant operations to come to a halt and cost both time and money.

To prevent these losses, it’s critical that you use additional protection measures, such as the SITOP add-on modules. These modules were designed to protect production lines from a variety of potential hazards on the primary and secondary sides. In addition, they allow for completely flexible expansion of SITOP power supply units up to total, all-around protection.

The newest addition to the SITOP add-on modules is the buffer module (item #6EP42317HB000AX0). This module helps bridge short-duration voltage dips thanks to electrolytic capacitors, reliably preserving interruption-free operation. It can also support the power supply unit when the power demand temporarily increases.

Power failures usually only last a fraction of a second – but the buffer modules help bridge failures up to the second range. The buffer module ensures buffer time depending on the load current:

  • 5 A load current: 2 400 ms
  • 10 A load current: 1 200 ms
  • 20 A load current: 600 ms
  • 40 A load current: 300 ms

The buffer time can also be increased by connecting up to five modules in parallel. It’s also easy to install, thanks to only two lines connecting the buffer module to the power supply unit.

An Xtraordinary Infrastructure Drive System: the SINAMICS G120XE

Introducing the PN/MF Coupler V5.0

The PN/MF Coupler V 5.0 allows users easy data exchange between two controllers.  This can be either be done over PROFINET to PROFINET or PROFINET to EtherNet/IP protocols.   

Compared to a programmed communication between two controllers, the PN/MF Coupler allows for:

  • Simple configuration using I/O data modules, regardless of whether via PROFINET or EtherNet/IP protocol
  • Large configuration limits
  • Almost delay-free coupling of data between the subnets and thus deterministic data exchange because it is an I/O communication
  • Complete network separation => no influence on neighboring subnet through fault states
  • Diagnostics of fault states of own and neighboring subnet
  • Redundant power supply if needed.

How does it work?

Through the configured inputs of a slot, the local CPU or EtherNet/IP scanner reads the values that the CPU of the other subnet writes over the configured outputs of the coupling partner. The local CPU or EtherNet/IP scanner writes values via the configured outputs of a slot. These values are received by the CPU of the other subnet via the configured inputs of the coupling partner.  In simple terms, the data looks exactly like I/O to each of the partner CPUs.

Upgrade Your Communication Opportunities When You Upgrade Your Firmware

ET 200SPSiemens new V5.0.3 firmware release maximizes the communication potential for the ET 200SP. By upgrading, customers can now use this MultiFieldbus Interface Module to connect controllers using PROFINET and EtherNet/IP.

Prior to the release, applications were limited to Modbus TCP connections. These new fieldbus protocols open the door for end users who occasionally use other EtherNet-based I/O systems in addition to PROFINET.

Using the MultiFieldbus Configuration Tool, engineers can easily implement the ET 200SP Station:

  1. Configure station (configuration and parameter assignment, comparable with TIA Portal HW Config).
  2. Transfer project to device (MF-IM).
  3. Configure device in the engineering system of the Modbus TCP controller (addressing). The MFCT provides the files required

Siemens Brings Back Definite Purpose Contactors

After a brief discontinuation, Siemens brings back Class 42 and Class 45 Definite Purpose Contactors.  As of November 12, 2019, the Siemens-invented Definite Purpose Contactors is available to order using original part numbers and matching the exact fit, form, and function of the previously available contactors.

Due to the rise in material costs and a diseconomy of scale, Siemens temporarily discontinued the Definite Purpose Contactors despite their increased demand and Class 45popularity back in 2011. Today, the DP Contactors return without the Class 34 2-Speed DP, Class 44 Reversing DP, or Class 16 DP Starter, which can now be filled with NEMA or IEC products.
